As a wife, mom, and homemaker, a lot of my days go by filled with duties and responsibilities. As someone who desires to do great things and make significant change in this world, there are times wherein something inside me still wonders if what I am doing at home counts.
I do know that I am called to support my husband and help him become the man God has destined him to be. I am aware too of the role that I play as a mother to my daughter cannot be replaced by anyone else. And just to set the records straight, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, being a wife to JA and a mom to Andi. The joy it brings me is incomparable.
However, having been a person who has dreamed a lot and desired a lot for her life brings me to question this. What makes what I do, even the most menial and ordinary tasks important? I have been pondering why I have fallen in love with what I do everyday. I wake up with so much excitement to live out everyday. A day that includes changing Andi’s diapers for the nth time, and putting back JA’s toothpaste and hair gel back to where it was originally placed (I have willingly given up on expecting him to do that, it has saved us from a lot of arguments). Also, there’s doing the grocery, making our weekly menu and cooking whenever I can. Then there’s teaching Andi to pray, to pack away, to say please, thank you, excuse me, etc., disciplining her, coloring and painting with her even if it means cleaning up a lot of mess afterwards, reading books with her, and watching Sound of Music, Dora, Backyardigans and Mary Poppins over and over again. Plus there’s managing my home and its affairs. You get the point. The list goes on endlessly.
Amidst the routine of my daily work, I have found contentment and fulfillment. And I know why what I do has become special in my eyes. The kind of work that I do, whether it is big or small is immaterial. The difference lies in who I do it for. What I do is important because I am doing it for the people I love.
That is why I desire to be excellent. I have long decided that my family deserves nothing less than my best, and that is a commitment to them that I want to keep.
And ultimately, more than achieving, more than any success, more than changing the world, I want my life to please the One I love the most. I do whatever it is that I do, for Him. And that is why everyday, I wake up with that end goal in mind. And everything because of that becomes extraordinarily special.
I’ve been waiting for this one. :-) You’re such a blessing to your family and to all who are close to it!
PS: (hehe) I like how you fit in the ending! Very nice!
